Does Walmart Take Apple Pay in 2021?
Currently, Walmart doesn’t accept Apple Pay as a payment method at its stores. This is because of the fact that the retailer has developed its own payment app i.e Walmart Pay. However, Walmart has made sure that it doesn’t disappoint all those Apple iPhone users by creating a way to take payments via iPhone but via its own app. In 2021, the accepted payment methods at Walmart are cash, PayPal, EBT, gift cards, Affirm, debit cards, and credit cards.
Take a quick look at the information provided below in order to know the reason why Apple Pay cannot be used at Walmart and also the steps you can follow to pay with your iPhone at a Walmart near you!
Why Walmart doesn’t have Apple Pay?
There are two reasons why Apple Pay is not available at Walmart yet –
- The first reason is Walmart has its own official payment app – Walmart Pay.
- Walmart does not accept Apple Pay because Walmart was a member of the Merchant Customer Exchange, or MCX.
This MCX group was formed in 2012 and includes retail giants such as Target, Kmart, and other popular companies along with Walmart to develop an alternative payment system that competes with traditional payment methods.
In 2012, this payment system was named CurrentC, and it’s a mobile app that users can use to pay for purchases at participating stores.
The goal of the project was to make shopping easier for consumers by allowing them to bypass cashiers and save time with their smartphones.
Unfortunately, the CurrentC app developed by MCX was deactivated in 2016 due to security issues.

Alternatives to Apple Pay to use at Walmart
Using gift cards to pay at Walmart: If you have a Walmart gift card, you can add it to your Walmart Pay account and use the balance on it to pay at a store near you.
Using Affirm to pay at Walmart: If you are looking to buy now and pay later, the best payment method you have is Affirm. With the Affirm app, you can check out at Walmart online & offline (i.e. in-store) just as you would do if Apple Pay is accepted. In order to pay with Affirm instead of Apple Pay at Walmart, go to affirm.com/walmart on your browser >> see if you prequalify for a loan >> select a payment term >> take your single-use barcode >> use it at Walmart checkout >> pay later online at affirm.com
Using PayPal to pay at Walmart: PayPal is a great alternative to Apple Pay to pay at Walmart. In order to use PayPal, simply swipe your PayPal debit card during the checkout process at Walmart. Or you can also link your card to Walmart Pay and scan the QR code to make the payment.
Pay with credit cards instead of Apple Pay: Sometimes going the traditional way is simple & easy rather than trying to use digital wallets & apps like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. Because, these three apps will be rejected at checkout at Walmart right away. Walmart accepts all major credit cards including Visa, American Express, Discover, and MasterCard.
